Unfortunately, you can't always sit with your head in the mountains. There will be times when you are at home and longing to go back to the mountains and hiking. For these moments, mountain books are the ideal solution. Imagine from home in the Alps, Himalayas, or the Andes. This time: Into Thin Air by John Krakower.
Into Thin Air by John Krakauer
Into Thin Air is the non-fiction travelogue of Journalist John Krakower to the world's highest mountain: Mount Everest. Through a deal with travel magazine 'Outside' John ends up on an expedition to the top in 1996 with Rob Hall's team of 'Advanture Consultants'. With a keen eye for relationships, customs on the mountain, and hazards along the way, Krakauer takes you from Kathmandu to the top of Everest.
John writes captivatingly and vividly from his own perspective. For weeks he lived on Mount Everest with a few dozen people. He does not hesitate to be skeptical about the actions of others. It turns out to be difficult enough to make rational decisions in the 'Zone of Death' (above 8000 meters) and to take care of yourself, let alone for someone else. Still, John knows how to sketch certain events in such a way that the climber Anatoli Boukreev, who was on the mountain with another expedition at the same time, led to writing his own book. Both tell their story about the events on Mount Everest. However, the real truth of what happened on Mount Everest in 1996 will remain in the middle forever. After reading both books, I believe John Krakower has the best papers for a true witness account. His own substantiations are also included in the print from 1999 onwards.
A thrilling witness report
Into Thin Air is a thrilling testimony of one of the most extreme expeditions ever. If you want to get an idea of what it means to spend a few weeks high up in the mountains, being dependent on sherpas but especially yourself, you should read this book. You feel the decay of the bodies, the lack of oxygen and the burning desire to pass the famous 'Hillary Step' in time during the day of your 'summit push'. This book gives an unprecedented insight into an expedition on Mount Everest. I couldn't get rid of my e-reader and read the book in 3 days (during a work week!;)).
Into Thin Air lets your desire to travel to the Himalayas sooner or later and see what John saw, or confirm your suspicion that mountaineers have a stitch loose somewhere. I myself plan to get acquainted with this mighty mountain for the first time in the spring of 2021.
